View of the Prairie near the Healing Center

This windy morning in the Spirit of joy I began painting a scene of the open prairie surrounding the Healing Center. The healing center sounds peculiar.  It is a center which focus is on healing our minds from its fractured vision of isolation.
Do you ever think you are different from the "others" around you? ...that things just don't fit together as they should.  Are you aware that is a common human condition?  Have you ever seriously asked why?
That is the beginning of the quest.

Edge of the Rock Plein Air Painting Event 2011 Paintings by Judith Reidy

Two Boys Fishing Rock River

14 x 11 inches unframed panel
19.5x 16.5 inches framed

$350
In Beloit this week it was really hot. My friend Wendie and I had been painting in the morning near the college (see painting below). The heat was in the upper nineties. We stopped for lunch then drove around looking for a good spot to paint again .

Me Dosing in a Dream
Wendie set up and got right into painting, but I couldn't and decided to 'veg' out on the lawn chair. I was dosing when in a dream state I started watching these little boys fishing across the way. I just had to paint them. I started into the painting and ten minutes in, they disappeared. So here they are from that dream state as I remember them and the the scene.

I was immediately drawn to this lovely white building and the flush of white light in the walk way up to the front door. So inviting. I have been working on white objects in shadow. I couldn't pass this one up.

We returned a second day of heat in Beloit, where we found a refreshing scene with water and a breeze....that grew hotter as the day went on....

Ash Tree at Sunset1

Ash Tree at Sunset

This past Sunday I started this painting at sunset. The light changed so quickly that I stopped and finished it last night,Monday, with some touch up this morning.

I like how the light hits the snow and creates lovely colors.

Judith Reidy & Fred Bell Painting - 78 Degrees at Whitnal Park 3-31-2010

Fred Bell and I were out painting today at Whitnall Park. It was terrific day to be out. We picked a spot just east of the Golf Club House on a hill overlooking an embankment covered with evergreens.

Spruces by Judith Reidy

Where is Fred Bell's painting?

Judith Reidy laughing at Fred.....

But where is Fred Bell?

Good Picture of Fred
Ah, there Fred is painting a spruce too. Two Freds?

Hidden under her hat, Judith is painting with her double.

Where is Fred's painting?

Looks done to me.

Check out Fred Bell's Facebook page to see the Painting close up.

It was a perfect day to paint outside.

A Light in a Dark Place
I have been quite amazed at how fun un-distracted painting can be. I like to close my eyes and think of the first sensation that comes to my mind's eye. It is light, pure light. It glows and burns away the dross of life. This morning I had another reminder of new life when I stepped outside. In our part of the world, a robin's breast is the first sign of spring. There the Robin was.

Nigeria Alerts Me
But I have been thinking about Nigeria...the ongoing genocide. What do Nigerian mothers wake up to each day? Is there a sense of gloom that hangs over them, as they wonder if they will be the next target?
Because of that, I am thinking about figures again in my landscapes. Figures as living souls, how do they rest in a world shaped by dichotomies?

31/40 of 40 Consecutive Painting a Day - Treeline in Fall

Treeline in Fall

Oil on Panel
$85.00
I painted this painting today, in the morning. It is a view of a creek near by. I was quite pleased with it. It was a odd morning with a mist of clouds hanging low in the sky, allowing a veil of soft difused light.

Revised Painting 7/40 from the the 40 Consecutive Painting a Day Challenge - My Backyard II

My Backyard II
7 1/4" x 5 1/4"
oil on panel
$75
contact the artist

Yesterday, I painted a view from my back yard. I painted rather thickly. I never had the problem photographing a piece like a did with this one.
I was dealing with a lot of glare. Because the sun had set when I finished it, I had to use light in my home, rather than diffused natural light from the outside. So today, I tried rephotographing it without success. Then I started painting from my imagination.

It was great fun.
Yet I still need to paint Painting 8/40 for today.

If you click on the painting you will see a blowup with all the texture and brush strokes.
