Tricky Project in Reading Colors as Values

Hope you enjoy this tricky project of reading colors as values.

  • Black to White in seven steps
  • Raw Sienna to light 4 steps
  • Raw Sienna and Cad Red Light 4 steps to white
  • Cad Red Light 4 steps to white
  • Burnt Umber in six steps
  • Raw Umber in seven steps

Take a look in Grayscale.
What do you think?
  • Is Raw Sienna and Cad Red Lt and the mix of the two actually closest to the third lightest grey?
  • Maybe all the colors in the fourth row are too light for the middle value?  Yes !
  • Can the Raw Umber and Burnt Umber  very Lightest  and second lightest be made lighter to match their gray value

Well, back to correcting the values.
Reading colors as values can be tricky

Edge of the Rock Plein Air Painting Event 2011 Paintings by Judith Reidy

Two Boys Fishing Rock River
by Judith Reidy
14 x 11 inches unframed panel
19.5x 16.5 inches framed
oil
$350
In Beloit this week it was really hot. My friend Wendie and I had been painting in the morning near the college (see painting below). The heat was in the upper nineties. We stopped for lunch then drove around looking for a good spot to paint again .

Me Dosing in a Dream
Wendie set up and got right into painting, but I couldn't and decided to 'veg' out on the lawn chair. I was dosing when in a dream state I started watching these little boys fishing across the way. I just had to paint them. I started into the painting and ten minutes in, they disappeared. So here they are from that dream state as I remember them and the the scene.

The President's White House

I was immediately drawn to this lovely white building and the flush of white light in the walk way up to the front door. So inviting. I have been working on white objects in shadow. I couldn't pass this one up.

We returned a second day of heat in Beloit, where we found a refreshing scene with water and a breeze....that grew hotter as the day went on....

Winter Tree at Sunset by Judith Reidy

Winter Tree at Sunset
11 x 14 inches unframed
14 x 17 inches framed
acrylic

This little gem is based on a tree in the Whitnall park that is near the road that leads up to the 'sledding hill' and the golf club house.
I like the inviting light in the distance and of course the tree on the way up the hill!

Enjoy this link to Sergei Bongart: Notes on Painting Compiled & edited by Norm Nason

As most of you know my personal focus of discussion this summer has been on value and color. I recently found a good article on color by

Sergei Bongart: Notes on Painting

Compiled & edited by Norm Nason

at this link.

I was particularly interested in the comments made about shadows in relation to form and the color of light and the object.

Enjoy!
