New Pastel Work by Judith Reidy

It has been exciting to be working in pastel again.  Such delicacy and fresh unfading color.
One of the qualities I appreciate about pastel is that the color never fades or yellows with age.  These images came from trips into the country this fall.

Bidding War on Judith Reidy Paintings

I often sell paintings...but I never had a bidding war like the one yesterday over my paintings. It is great feeling to know that somebody likes your painting that much! I must admit I was particularly pleased with the way I was able to create repeated pieces of quality this week. I am confident they saw that and wanted part of it for themselves.

I was sad however, that one patron from the Beloit Plein Air (who previously had a piece in Beloit they wanted of mine sold out right from under them) came up to Cedarburg and in the end rush of the bidding war for two of my pieces in a silent auction, failed to take home from Cedarburg either of the two they wanted. However, one patron who won the bidding whom I met this week, is an accomplished artist. I was delighted that she enjoyed the piece too. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet the other patron who won the bid on another piece. As an artist I was amazed and delighted by the enthusiasm of the bidders. I was glad that I did not have to manage the bidding and resolve the controversy over who was the winner. That would not have been an easy job for me.

In the end I sold all four of these paintings yesterday. I am happy that the patrons connected with my work and wanted to make it part of their life permanently to enjoy.

It was a rainy day at the Riveredge Nature Center out side of Newburg, WI where the Cederburg Plein Air Event began its days of painting, quick paints and sundry other activities. See this link for more details.
I painted two paintings this rainy Wednesday. One from a bird stand the other, this one, from the porch at the rear of the center. It is really an impression of the day.

One Oil, Two Pastels Today and a Little Joke

Light's Rapture

7" x 9"

Blue Mist
Pastel

9" x 12"

Blue Mist 1
Pastel

9" x 12"
These three paintings kept me dreaming during my weekend fever with the flu. I am happy to make them into a reality.

Ok, I have a joke.

An artist asked the gallery owner if there had been any interest in his paintings on display at that time.

"I have good news and bad news," the owner replied. "The good news is that a gentleman inquired about your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after your death. When I told him it would, he bought all 15 of your paintings."

"That's wonderful," the artist exclaimed. "What's the bad news?"
"The guy was your doctor..."

Oh well.

Treeline in Fall

I painted this painting today, in the morning. It is a view of a creek near by. I was quite pleased with it. It was a odd morning with a mist of clouds hanging low in the sky, allowing a veil of soft difused light.

29/40 of 40 Consecutive Paintings a Day - Kelly Lake Dock

Kelly Lake Dock
8" x 6"
Watercolor on Paper
$75

Today, I took my small inflatable boat onto to Kelly Lake, rowed across the lake and tied my boat to a raft and began this painting. I worked on it until the rain came down heavily.
Then I rowed to shore loaded the boat and went home.

This secluded lake is a hidden gem in Hales Corners... my little Eden where I can go to decompress.

Revised Painting 7/40 from the the 40 Consecutive Painting a Day Challenge - My Backyard II

Yesterday, I painted a view from my back yard. I painted rather thickly. I never had the problem photographing a piece like a did with this one.
I was dealing with a lot of glare. Because the sun had set when I finished it, I had to use light in my home, rather than diffused natural light from the outside. So today, I tried rephotographing it without success. Then I started painting from my imagination.

It was great fun.
Yet I still need to paint Painting 8/40 for today.

If you click on the painting you will see a blowup with all the texture and brush strokes.

My First Paint a Day

Road Uphill at Malin Head

$75

This is the first in a series of daily paintings that I am doing. As part of a commitment to doing a painting a day for the next 40 days, I have planned to do these completed studies in preparation for larger pieces. Each day I intend to spend a portion of my painting time with the intent of making one completed painting. The balance of the work day will be in painting a larger piece and or in other art related tasks.

This painting was done from a photo and memory of my trip to Ireland. The steely sky and wet roads marked the area, along with the white stone homes along the way.

What do you think?

Road Trip to DC Journal Entry 1

Yesterday, Monday, we woke at 3am and left by 4:30 for a trip to DC. Traveling from Wisconsin, through Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio we arrived at Breezewood, Pennsylvania for the evening.

After a good nights sleep, I awoke without an alarm at about 5 am, dressed and stole away with the car and my camera to the surrounding countryside of hills, valleys and winding roads blanketed in patches of clouds.

MISTS of every sort surrounded me. From the ridge, I could see mists in the valleys below and in the mountains above.
I could drive with a clear view and in a moment find myself entering the gauzy air of sunlit fog until I could barely see though a thick blanket of cloud until again light glowed ahead as I traveled around a turn down the road and up a hill reintroduced to the sun.

Tree limbs criss-crossed my path caging me into a wooden web silent but for the brook below and the twitter of birds awaking the morning.

For someone fascinated with mists, I thought that while on this earth this was nearly like dying and going to heaven.

Feature Story for February 2009 about Judith Reidy's Mist Paintings

Judith Reidy’s Visions in the Mist

Review by Stacy William - Ng

in February 2009 Issue of
MILWAUKEE HOME and FINE LIVING

JUDITH REIDY IS A SOFT-SPOKEN, THOUGHTFUL artist whose intelligence and dedication to her work sparkle through her like flecks of pink light in her misty landscapes. She compares her recent work to investigating a mystery. Judith’s pieces are completed after hours of observation, studying the gradations of color as they fluctuate in the atmosphere. In warm weather, she will work in watercolors in the open air. In winter, she creates “studio works,” relying on memory, supported by photos and color studies. Her final depiction tells a story of how subtle tonal changes took place in the scene over a period of time.

Her pastels of misty Ireland are truly astounding. According to Judith, who visited Ireland last year, “I had become interested in mists here, when I was going up to Crystal Ridge here in Wisconsin, I would go early in the morning, looking due east, and there were these mists that captured my imagination.” When she went to visit her daughter overseas later in the year, the mystical (and misty) scenes of Inishowen Peninsula were a perfect subject matter. “I sat at the window for 13 days, looking at the Bay, studying light, and painting. It was magical.”

One thing that struck Judith while in Ireland was their view of the sky. “I was at the 60th latitude, and I wondered why the sky never achieved the pink that we see here, at about the 44th. I did some research on it and apparently northern European skies get more yellows and whites than North American skies, which show more violets and pinks. In that sense we have light that’s more like what you see in French master landscapes, which would have been created at similar latitudes to ours.”

Judith Reidy is part of a two-person show with Cynthia Son, currently on view at the Griffin Gallery in Oconomowoc. The show will be up through the end of February.
