I received a message from the Delind Gallery telling me that they found a new home for the Grapes Painting. They would be sending me a check in the mail today! We are all delighted along with the new happy owner of Grapes.

I enjoy this painting a lot, which I painted in acrylic from life. I love the simplicity and clarity of the colors and shapes which create a rich inviting warmth of visual delight with the plate of luscious fruit. This was one of the first paintings of my grape and vineyard series which continues to grow in explorations of rich warm colors.

I have been working with mists in pastel in the past, having a special fascination with light. Also, I have been interested in light in portraiture beginning the work in oil often with a sienna under-painting which also creates a warm atmospheric glow in the portrait. I have been intrigued with the power of quick strong strokes in the first impression of the light idea. In these landscapes created purely form my imagination and memory of light I am distilling the purity of the past impressions of glowing light with a quick hand.

Come on over the the Waukesha Art Crawl this Saturday, December 3, 2011, and learn about the classes starting in January taught by Lorin Willey and Judith Reidy at the Clinton Street Gallery.

The Art Crawls occur several times a year. It is a time from 4 to 10 pm where the whole Waukesha downtown is a buzz with activities in all the many galleries, retail stores and restaurants. There should be live music and celebration everywhere. Be at the December 4 Art Crawl!

Yesterday I met Arpik, while I participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure along with my husband Timothy Reidy .
Who is Arpik, but a Russian born Armenian artist, trained in the tradition of the classical Russian art School. She along with myself and many other artists, painted a Kohls Cares Ribbon for the event.

Together, she and I spent the morning photographing painted sculpture ribbons and people as we walked the race/walk route ourselves
I enjoyed my time so very much with Arpik. We talked about her life in Russia, her arrival in America, her family here. But what really interested me was her distinct training as an artist.
Trained in the classical tradition, with a strong emphasis on fundamental skills, of drawing and composition, she spent her first years painting still lifes and the last two years of training on nothing but drawing and painting from life in Figure drawing.

Skilled as an artist, Arpik,has taught at the University level but now does well doing commissioned projects in Stained glass, watercolor and oil without teaching. She has had various exhibitions, one Floral show recently at the Delind Gallery this past April.
I am hoping to urge her into Facebook and the internet when I publish this note.

Yet, apparently she is doing quite well devoting her time to making art over talking about making art! According to Arpik each of the flowers in her ribbon have symbolic meaning tied to them. What intrigued me was the bleeding hearts.
Thank you, Arpik, for a wonderful morning. We will have to meet again and paint together!

Here are the finished Ribbons without the base. The ribbon to be on display at the local Kohl's Department Store in Oak Creek in September and October, accept for a time where this sculpture and others will be along the route of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, September 25th. At the end of October there will be a national auction of the 17 sculptures, including my , Judith Reidy's 'Friends'.

I hope that my sculpture, Friends, will end up in a hospital or cancer care center to serve as an inspiration and encouragement to cancer patients and their families.

I have been working on the Kohl's Komen Cancer Ribbon project.. It is down the wire as the sculptures have been delivered late. I am still painting the upper half which suggests the trans-formative aspect of love and hope in healing for the cancer patient. The woman is flying....soaring....bodily psychologically, emotionally if not spiritually.

I hope to finish the piece in the next two days.

In doing this scene I had this idea of a dark pathway enveloped by walls and shrubbery leading into light. I did this in preparation for the Paint the Festival submission at the Cedarburg Plein Air Event. This studio completed Plein Air painting was based on a view of Cedar Park in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. I worked on this during the Cedarburg Plein Air Event, while other artists around me were painting other views in the area. I started this painting, then painted the same scene in the Quick Paint which sold in the event. I thought about submitting this fine painting to the main event as well, but in the end decided not to do that since it was too similar to the quick paint painting. But it is available for purchase now like the others were which sold.

This painting, I started and completed this past Saturday morning at the Milwaukee Sketch Club Plein Air Paint Out at Calhoun Park in New Berlin, Wisconsin. It was a beautiful morning to be out painting, while the New Berlin Little League championship games were in full swing. I painted while listening to the crack of the bat to the teams laughter and cheers. I had found a secluded place in the shade looking west with only occasional curious onlookers. It was a terrific morning!

Bidding War on Judith Reidy Paintings

I often sell paintings...but I never had a bidding war like the one yesterday over my paintings. It is great feeling to know that somebody likes your painting that much! I must admit I was particularly pleased with the way I was able to create repeated pieces of quality this week. I am confident they saw that and wanted part of it for themselves.

I was sad however, that one patron from the Beloit Plein Air (who previously had a piece in Beloit they wanted of mine sold out right from under them) came up to Cedarburg and in the end rush of the bidding war for two of my pieces in a silent auction, failed to take home from Cedarburg either of the two they wanted. However, one patron who won the bidding whom I met this week, is an accomplished artist. I was delighted that she enjoyed the piece too. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet the other patron who won the bid on another piece. As an artist I was amazed and delighted by the enthusiasm of the bidders. I was glad that I did not have to manage the bidding and resolve the controversy over who was the winner. That would not have been an easy job for me.

In the end I sold all four of these paintings yesterday. I am happy that the patrons connected with my work and wanted to make it part of their life permanently to enjoy.

In Beloit this week it was really hot. My friend Wendie and I had been painting in the morning near the college (see painting below). The heat was in the upper nineties. We stopped for lunch then drove around looking for a good spot to paint again .

Me Dosing in a Dream
Wendie set up and got right into painting, but I couldn't and decided to 'veg' out on the lawn chair. I was dosing when in a dream state I started watching these little boys fishing across the way. I just had to paint them. I started into the painting and ten minutes in, they disappeared. So here they are from that dream state as I remember them and the the scene.

Saturday Wisconsin Plein Air Painters Association had their year end paint out in downtown Waukesha. It was about 20 Degrees in the sun. I set up looking east at the tower at the corner of the building that housed the Steaming Cup.

The gem was a 5" x 8" oil. I love the icy light of this winter day on the top on the tower and the tree limbs in the foreground.

The top portrait "Rachael" intrigued me with the idea of having the major side of the face in shadow. That meant I needed to paint in grayed middle values, creating form using warm and cool colors. I had been working with a similar problem in my landscape paintings when painting a white or light colored building in shadow, when the light elsewhere is mostly in light.

The square painting, "Tom" was interesting to me for two reasons. One Tom's features were so very angular. The second challenge was painting his rich brown skin in the light.

This portrait has a different feel than some of the other portraits, perhaps a little Ernst Ludwig Kirchner feel.

I have two similar paintings. One is morning and the other is afternoon light. Which is morning?

Before I went to the Milwaukee Sketch Club, I dropped off some paintings at the Rosenblatt Gallery where I will be having work through the end of November.

I painted these two paintings while watching the light change, standing to the west of the scene....in my dining room.

In the Monday painting I made today, I was interested in the light on the steps and walk.

In the Sunday paintings, I was interested in studying the light in the two different light situations. In the day light painting the interest was in the shape of the light with the shape of the dark, whereas the dusk painting focus was clearly on the bench and table, the only form that could be seen in the dying light.

I consider these quick studies.

I did this oil portrait this last Tuesday at the Milwaukee Sketch Club open studio session, while Fred and others drew or painted the gentleman.
Not bad, in so far that I have been out on the back patio doing still life's of pots and fruit and outside painting Plein Air landscapes all summer.

I feel privileged to have been painting with Fred Bell at various events and outings this past season. Starting on Thursday October 1, next week, I will be beginning Fred Bell's Official Class on Portraiture. He has prepared to have live models sit for us. He has much to share.

I am real excited about the upcoming 4 week Portraiture Class.

Greg LaRock,

National Award Winning Plein Air Artist

As many of you may know I spent the earlier part of the month, September 12-16 up in Door County at a Plein Air Workshop with Greg La Rock at the Peninsula School of Art. It was a tremendous opportunity.

I would like to begin by sharing with you a slide show of Photos I took as Greg did a demo for the group of students. Greg was a great instructor, clear yet flexible in teaching. What interested me the most was his ability to talk through his thinking while he was painting, allowing us to "hear" him "weighing his choices" as he buildt his painting. I found being able to hear him "weigh out his choices" extremely insightful. I heard him think through what he wanted to make out as the over arching story in his painting...how he wanted to identify and keep his focal point as he built his painting. I heard as he created his plan and watched how he used the preliminary drawing to begin to flesh out his plan. I saw how he evaluated the foreground, middle ground and background values, temperature and colors to keep within their "space" while maintaining his focal point.

I wish I had an audio to accompany these slides. I certainly don't want to give you the impression that Greg style of teaching insisted on one right solution to building a plein air landscape painting. It would be better to say he gave students some framework and tools to use when they made choices when planning and building a Plein Air landscape painting. He encouraged every student to discover their personal response to the landscape before them and then create a story that would capture and hold their audience. If I painter wanted the viewer to focus on particular aspect of the landscape or days light, as an instructor Greg gave us the evaluation tools to begin to make the design and technical choices to do so. We talked about everything from conception of idea, to design on the canvas to brush handling and mediums that would facilitate what we were after.

A PIE CONVERSATION: Developing Creativity or Skills

From Our PIE Conversations.....
I know that some of you have been part of the Pie Conversations of this past Sunday evening. Some of you walked away quite surprised that after four years in school as a painting and drawing major so little painting was actually done. You learn that the emphasis in much of the University training in art is more designed to foster a broad understanding of the creative endeavors, be they theater, music, dance and well as the visual arts. The general trend in the 70's was not to teach skills but to facilitate investigation and inquiry. Schools vacillate in their emphasis depending on the staff and goals of the school. In art education, most assuredly the emphasis is on providing an opportunity to explore and develop creativity in the young, over teaching skills, especially in the younger years.

Curious to me why art is singled out as the mechanism to teach creativity. Why not music? A young child is given some materials and encouraged to explore and create.... a picture. Would a young child be given an flute or drum and told to make music? It is assumed that making music requires some preliminary skills, while it seems that there is the belief that visual art has no such criteria.

I remember teaching first graders how to do blind contour drawing of weeds. They, their parents and the other teachers were amazed how beautiful and life like the young children's drawings were. But teaching blind contour drawing was not in the curriculum for First Graders. The idea was that art was not to involve quiet concentration or attention ( like music ) but play.

Besides what value is there to teaching basic drawing as opposed nurturing creativity that can be applied to many disciplines?

This little light study of fruit was started on Saturday, the day I pulled the electric cord out of the freezer. As a result the painting is pretty electrifying.

This is the delicious cranberry orange walnut scone, freshly prepared by me that was never eaten.

The title of the artwork is

It is sized 5" x 6"
I put the cranberry, orange, walnut scone on a black plate along with a white tea cup onto a blue checkered table cloth.
The black shiny plate caught subtle reflections.

I did eat another scone with a cup of iced coffee today. I have 15 other scones that I won't eat, for dietary reasons. You are welcome to them, as long as you clean up the kitchen while I paint. :-)

The scone that I ate was delicious.

Today I again painted a still life with an apple and an orange. This time I included a tea pot on a cloth covered table out in the sun.
I did not end up putting the fruit on the black plate rather I placed the objects on a light blue light. I ended up turning up the glow of the sun on the tablecloth to juxtapose the cool shadows of the pot and fruit.

Tomorrow I hope to paint another orange and apple in a sunlit setting.

I am enjoying these still lifes.

Now my Spanish sentence for the the day shall be:

La manzana y la naranja están en la mesa con la tela azul.

Today with the companionship and encouragement of a good friend and artist I painted an apple, orange and a white tea cup on a bamboo table outside. My friend, Fred Bell painted the still life, too, from a different angle. It was interesting since yesterday I painted basically the same collection of items with one exception. Yesterday, I had the fruit on a white plate. The reflections on the fruit from the white plate virtually obliterated the shadow on the red apple. Today we looked at different colored plates with the fruit. Each plate created a different reflected light on the fruit. We decided not to use a plate and just go with the natural bamboo table top. Tomorrow en Plein Air, when I paint #2, I may try a black plate as a tray for the fruit.

I am also learning Spanish this summer with my husband, Tim.

Selecting a New Apprentice

I have an idea. I am looking for an apprentice to train and work. This apprentice would observe me paint and learn to paint as well in exchange for labor. The tasks of the apprentice would be to observe me place paint on my pallet after they brought me a cup of freshly prepared latte. Throughout the day they would bring me ice water in a glass and adjust the fan on hot days. They would be taught to build canvas stretchers and stretch canvas. They could then make my stretchers and theirs. They could gesso the canvases. They can drive out to the mill and purchase frames or parts for frames and assemble them, remembering to pick up the glass and matts as well. They would take my business calls and take down messages from me for correspondence which they would prepare and send on my behalf. They could prepare lunch and supper and bring it to us for our meal.

If I wanted another chair they would get it. ....and maybe something for my feet. which might get tired since I would be standing and painting most of the day.

At the end of the day we could share a glass of wine or a beer and sit on the porch.

After 5 to 10 years depending on their progress, I would certify them as a master painter and begin bringing up my next waiting apprentice.

I have a life that did not become,

that turned aside and stopped,

astonished:

I hold it in me like a pregnancy or

as on my lap a child

not to grow old but dwell on

it is to his grave I most

frequently return and return

to ask what is wrong, what was

wrong, to see it all by

the light of a different necessity

but the grave will not heal

and the child,

stirring, must share my grave

with me, an old man having

gotten by on what was left

when I go back to my home country in these

fresh far-away days, its convenient to visit

everybody, aunts and uncles, those who used to say,

look how hes shooting up, and the

trinket aunts who always had a little

something in their pocketbooks, cinnamon bark

or a penny or nickel, and uncles who

were the rumored fathers of cousins

who whispered of them as of great, if

troubled, presences, and school

teachers, just about everybody older

(and some younger) collected in one place

waiting, particularly, but not for

me, mother and father there, too, and others

close, close as burrowing

under skin, all in the graveyard

assembled, done for, the world they

used to wield, have trouble and joy

in, gone

the child in me that could not become

was not ready for others to go,

to go on into change, blessings and

horrors, but stands there by the road

where the mishap occurred, crying out for

help, come and fix this or we

cant get by, but the great ones who

were to return, they could not or did

not hear and went on in a flurry and

now, I say in the graveyard, here

lies the flurry, now it cant come

back with help or helpful asides, now

we all buy the bitter

incompletions, pick up the knots of

horror, silently raving, and go on

crashing into empty ends not

completions, not rondures the fullness

has come into and spent itself from

I stand on the stump

of a child, whether myself

or my little brother who died, and

yell as far as I can, I cannot leave this place, for

for me it is the dearest and the worst,

it is life nearest to life which is

life lost: it is my place where

I must stand and fail,

calling attention with tears

to the branches not lofting

boughs into space, to the barren

air that holds the world that was my world

though the incompletions

(& completions) burn out

standing in the flash high-burn

momentary structure of ash, still it

is a picture-book, letter-perfect

Easter morning: I have been for a

walk: the wind is tranquil: the brook

works without flashing in an abundant

tranquility: the birds are lively with

voice: I saw something I had

never seen before: two great birds,

maybe eagles, blackwinged, whitenecked

and headed, came from the south oaring

the great wings steadily; they went

directly over me, high up, and kept on

due north: but then one bird,

the one behind, veered a little to the

left and the other bird kept on seeming

not to notice for a minute: the first

began to circle as if looking for

something, coasting, resting its wings

on the down side of some of the circles:

the other bird came back and they both

circled, looking perhaps for a draft;

they turned a few more times, possibly

risingat least, clearly resting

then flew on falling into distance till

they broke across the local bush and

trees: it was a sight of bountiful

majesty and integrity: the having

patterns and routes, breaking

from them to explore other patterns or

better ways to routes, and then the

return: a dance sacred as the sap in

the trees, permanent in its descriptions

as the ripples round the brooks

ripplestone: fresh as this particular

flood of burn breaking across us now

from the sun.

Life as a Painter

I have been rising early and starting to paint around 3:30- 4 AM every morning, before everyone else is up and the phone is ringing. I can say I have been painting 3+ hours. I then stop for breakfast and rest my hand and arm, (working large in pastel can be very physical). I enjoy conversation, do a few household chores, brew a good cup of freshly ground coffee, and return to my painting. By 11 am, I have been painting about 7 hours. I am ready for a walk and lunch. It is a wonderful feeling, to know that I can paint more or do whatever else needs to be done or I wish to do, knowing that I have a good day of painting in already. I seem to enjoy the rest of the day more.

I have been listening to Entitled Opinions and the literature under discussion while I paint. I look forward to my conversations with many of you either on Facebook or in person peppering the balance of the day.

It was a very rainy Saturday, so I painted this view of the corner of State and Harwood from the inside ORO looking through double glass, a window and my glasses. Am I painting the Plein Air if I look through double or single glass?

Response to Robert Genn's Newsletter Post Regarding Creativity and Fundamentalism

Robert,

I wish I had time to write a treatise in response to the article in your newsletter, Creativity and Fundamentalism. I currently am a creative artist who in the past graduated from UW- Milwaukee with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree. In my final years of college I "returned" to God. As I married shortly thereafter and started a family, I began homeschooling. It was one of the most creative activities of my life, hanging in trees reading poems, hunting out woodland flowers and drawing them, building forts and dressing up like Athenian heroes. What ever we read as a family, I found my four children pretending and extending. They named all our trees and gave them life stories. They built whatever was needed to make their world come alive.

Today they are grown, or still in college with advance degrees having traveled continents and lived in diverse places among diverse people. They are not all artists but they create artfully and see with fresh eyes in their pastimes. They write, they shoot photos, they use their hands and their minds in their life work. They are invaluable in their respective jobs because they are able to look at the world in different ways. They are not hindered by peer pressure and mob thought, yet they love and respect their fellowman because God has taught them to love their neighbor. They are not perfect by any stretch, but I am proud of their courage.

They are creative, yet responsible...and kind...yet not easily manipulated.

I don't believe in creative divergent thinking without boundaries. Ah, some will say, there is the rub of her fundamentalist religion that smashes REAL creative thinking.

My reply is: do we really want a society without boundaries? More accurately can we survive a world without boundaries? Do we want to define creative freedom as the place to think or imagine and physically build something...anything? I don't think so. Do we really want a place where slashing murder or verbal abuse are just another alternative or divergent pattern of thought turned into "creative" action? How far is too far?

Rigidity is character trait of any cultural group. The boundaries that define rigidity move, but are just as rigid and unyielding. Have culture group A or B define the boundaries of fundamentalism and the fundamentalist attitude regarding man as a creative being; the answers would demonstrate the simple cultural rigidity of both that limits their understanding.

A fundamentalist premise is God created the universe from nothing and we are created in God's image and likeness. Hence...conclusion, we are creative beings. That is our lineage.

As a fundamentalist, those are boundaries. I am created, I did not create myself from nothing. I am not God, but I am made in God's image. I am most certainly a creative and moral being.

I am not random chance happening. Get serious, imagine what would it really be like to live in a totally random world at the end this sentence?

A Light in a Dark Place

I have been quite amazed at how fun un-distracted painting can be. I like to close my eyes and think of the first sensation that comes to my mind's eye. It is light, pure light. It glows and burns away the dross of life. This morning I had another reminder of new life when I stepped outside. In our part of the world, a robin's breast is the first sign of spring. There the Robin was.

But I have been thinking about Nigeria...the ongoing genocide. What do Nigerian mothers wake up to each day? Is there a sense of gloom that hangs over them, as they wonder if they will be the next target?
Because of that, I am thinking about figures again in my landscapes. Figures as living souls, how do they rest in a world shaped by dichotomies?

Ok, I have a joke.

An artist asked the gallery owner if there had been any interest in his paintings on display at that time.

"I have good news and bad news," the owner replied. "The good news is that a gentleman inquired about your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after your death. When I told him it would, he bought all 15 of your paintings."

"That's wonderful," the artist exclaimed. "What's the bad news?"
"The guy was your doctor..."

Oh well.

Fallen for You

Fallen Again

I began in the previous post...."As I have explored the effects of light burning away the mists, I have considered what it is in the imagery that has fascinated me..."

but that was not it.

Hearing those rattling cages, I gather my recent work in my “From dust to Dust” series has created quite a stirring reaction from many of you, . Good!

I have been stirred up and the work is a bi-product….but the motivation behind the work may not be what you may think. I am passionate about the stunning reality of the transformations and troubles of the unsettled dust of the past several months because…

“She held out her arms and pulled me toward her…. “

In mid- December a woman arrived to be a guest in my home for the holidays. She is an unbelievable delight..always an encouragement. For one she has always been the one who said I could do anything. She was my first art patron. Everyone has a mother, even artists.

At the time of her recent arrival, she seemed more unsteady on her feet than at her last visit. As the month past, her ability to walk declined rapidly, until now her walker is her constant companion.

Her falls began daily as she would attempt to rise or sit or turn, until I stood guard spotting for her at each step. When she collapsed in my arms, I then understood I could not support her with my strength nor was I capable of being her main and only guard.

I saw time and strength slip through our fingers.

It is out of this context and the ensuing struggle that my new series “From Dust to Dust” took shape. As I wrapped my arms around her frail body and bathed her back while she clawed herself through the day in and out of her bed or chair, I saw time and strength slip through our fingers.

I ask why. I hear reasons, but they are not fitting into our Madison Avenue view of life. They are not tidy. My religious conviction prepared me, but only the reality of being with her gave me understanding.

At night, I tucked her into her covers, she held out her arms and pulled me toward her to gently kiss me with her quivering lips, holding me so tightly for ever so long … then whispering, “Thank you, Judy;… I love you.”

Yes from dust we came yet, most assuredly to dust we will return. While “From Dust” may declare the glory of our bodies, “Fallen Again,” returns us to the troubles of living in a world gone awry.

My mother had to move to a place where she could be assisted with every task and where staff were prepared to carry her.

As I have explored the effects of light burning away the mists, I have considered what it is in the imagery that has fascinated me. Why was I so drawn to the light and the void of darkness burning away by the light. At the same time I began drawing the people around me. I especially enjoyed doing line drawings of my mother, catching her sighs and her groans and joys in the lines on her face and in her hands and arms. I felt the imagery of real people and the landscapes needed to be brought together as they are in life. I began seeing the human bodies rising out of the earth as new landscapes approached by light, yet oblivious to the light. I have more to consider and discover in this new direction.

A slight breeze brushes the green leaves,
a reminder of summer’s crossing,
the green lobes of the oak leaf
polished and glistening liked waxed fruit
will crinkle from water loss like the rest of nature aging,
no tarted up polyurethane for you,
later gawkers at your colors, leaf peepers,
and you blind to adulation,
knowing no one can re-live what isn’t known.

But we know lost passion.
It remarks on wrinkles like withering
strawberries ripe and red,
losing taste and succulence,
not a single mouth wants you.

A season can be enough to rage the soul.
Memories tied to a face tattooed with mold
but those are hard to understand,
when words for you are the mist of warmth––
breath to push away the fate of winter.

Reflections with One Vision- Portraiture

I had some reflections on a wonderful discussion panel this past Friday evening at the Charles Allis Art Museum on which Graeme Reid, Michael Foster, Kattie Musloff and her dear 87 year model where members.

Though I have been a landscape painter most of my career as a painter, I have a fascination with figure work and portraiture for the very reasons they discussed that night.

Particularly, I was attracted to how Katie made her models part of her life. So often as painters we are loners who paint forms or respond to forms as if they were inanimate and we are the ones who give them life in our art. Perhaps, that is what Graeme was referring , when he asked about "objectivity" as a necessity for an artist.

I do at times appreciate when artists take a dis-interesting object and infuse it with life; i.e. paint something ugly beautifully. Nevertheless, while, I, as did the panel, recognize the need for an artist to have an objective technical understanding of the painting before him and in some measure an objective view of what painting is about in general, I often fail to be intrigued by the commonly clinical-like-view that is respected among my contemporary artists when discussing their work "objectively" or mechanically.

What appealed to me in Katie's work was the personal response and respect she maintains for and toward her models... who often become her friends. You may ask what does that have to do with painting or making great art.

In Katie's personal engagement with her models she is able sensitively to begin to connect with the humanity of her model/friends not through a mechanical process but through the her own body kinetically, perceptively and personally in drawing and painting responding to the humanity and life in her subjects before her.

I think that is what made Rembrandt great. Not only was his mind able to connect psychologically with the humanity or soul of his subject, his hand was able to kinetically capture not just the physical likeness but more significantly articulate/capture the soul or humanity before him. That is not objective, but subjective response at its best. His sensibilities matched by his skill, touch a chord that resonates over time and communicates only in the way great art does in truth. This phenomena is the attraction in making paintings and why painting and drawing will never die.

As for myself and my drawings of my mother, I found my line drawings to be very much a kinetic response to my feelings for her and about her. They go beyond a mere likeness. I felt a connection to her moods and her dilemma as an aging woman. I felt elegance and brokenness. I connected in my body with her in my physical response of making art.

What I like about my opportunity with the Lake Country Ten Artist Ten Poets One Vision Project is being able to share my painting “Leaves” based on my drawings of my mother in collaboration and response to my poet, Paula Anderson who has similar sensibilities in writing. In this project, I feel the joy and exhilaration of meaningful human connection as well as the pleasure of kinetic response in painting.

I am currently part of a collaborative poet/painter program that began this summer. We are having our first presentation this October 17, at 7 pm, at the Raven Gallery outside of Pewaukee on Capitol. I would like to invite you to the poetry reading and the viewing of the artwork.

I liked working with my poet, Paula Anderson. I found a poem that she wrote expressed emotionally what I had sensed in making a drawing a few years ago. As she expressed sensibilities in her poetry, I was happy to develop my complementary idea further in making a painting. I found this to be one of the most emotionally honest pieces about being an aging woman; I would like to do more collaboration.

However, the idea is not very pretty, and therefore not appealing to those, which is most of us, who are hesitant to face reality. As an artist who attempts to be honest, I identify with the dilemma of the woman, who is aging. I realized that Paula and I had a common thought on the subject so the project did not seem like illustration, but a natural shared response to life. I liked the common bond it forged between Paula and I.

I would like to meet with other poets and artists and do more of this sort of thing. I hope you can come, perhaps you would like to be part of the next event sharing in our expressed experiences. Perhaps you have a poem or a creative exploration to share in the future. Let us know. Please don't be shy. I would love to see you.

Do any of you have an item you just can't throw away. Well so do I. I hold on to the memory of friendships with items we have shared together. One such item is our tea tray, which sadly broke this past Thursday while I was carrying in dinner dishes from the patio.This tray holds memories of service to friends and family served tea and special coffees and pie around the table. It holds memories of laughter and stories and heart break in summer, winter, fall .... I hope we can repair it. Most of all it was made by my husband some twenty plus years ago.I have other such memory with a recipe storage book that is falling to pieces. It was a wedding shower gift from one of my favorite aunts, Aunt Christine, whose middle name I have. As a young girl, I was impressed with her kindness and elegance. She taught me how to set a table. She taught me how to create things. She taught be that I could create beautiful things. Yet the recipe book cover itself is more sweet than I prefer, every time I use it I think of her.
